Women’s Health
Physiotherapy
Evidence-based physiotherapy designed specifically for women — addressing pelvic floor dysfunction, pregnancy and postnatal recovery, pelvic pain, continence and beyond. Part of the Elevate Her service at our Bella Vista clinic.
Physiotherapy that
understands your body
Women's health physiotherapy goes beyond general musculoskeletal care. It addresses the unique physical demands placed on women's bodies through pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, perimenopause and everyday life.
Our women's health physiotherapist conducts a thorough assessment — including internal pelvic floor assessment where appropriate and consented — and develops a treatment plan tailored to your specific presentation and goals.
Whether you are leaking when you cough, experiencing pelvic pain, recovering from birth, or preparing your body for pregnancy, women's health physiotherapy can help you get back to feeling comfortable and capable in your body.
Conditions we commonly
work with
Women’s health physiotherapy addresses a wide range of presentations across every life stage. Assessment is always thorough and tailored to your individual situation.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Weakness, tightness or incoordination of the pelvic floor muscles — assessed with internal or external examination depending on your presentation and preference.
Urinary Incontinence
Leaking with coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise (stress incontinence), or urgency and frequency (urge incontinence). Highly treatable with targeted pelvic floor rehabilitation.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Pressure, heaviness or bulge symptoms from bladder, uterine or bowel prolapse. Conservative management with pelvic floor training, load management and lifestyle advice.
Pregnancy-Related Pain
Pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis dysfunction, lower back pain and rib pain throughout pregnancy. Manual therapy and exercise prescription adjusted to each trimester.
Postnatal Rehabilitation
Return to exercise after birth, diastasis recti (abdominal separation), scar tissue management (perineal or caesarean) and rebuilding functional core strength.
Pelvic Pain
Dyspareunia (painful intercourse), vaginismus, vulvodynia and endometriosis-related pain. Collaborative care with your GP or specialist where appropriate.
Bowel Dysfunction
Constipation, faecal urgency or incontinence related to pelvic floor dysfunction. Conservative assessment and management, including bowel habit and toileting advice.
Perimenopause & Menopause
Hormonal changes that affect pelvic floor strength, continence, joint health and musculoskeletal function. Exercise and manual therapy tailored to this life stage.
Pre-surgical & Post-surgical
Pelvic floor preparation before gynaecological surgery and rehabilitation following hysterectomy, prolapse repair or other pelvic procedures.
Your first appointment
Women’s health physiotherapy appointments are private, confidential and conducted with sensitivity throughout. Your comfort and consent guide everything.
Detailed history
A thorough discussion of your symptoms, bladder and bowel habits, obstetric history, relevant medical background and your goals for treatment. This is a private, confidential consultation.
Assessment
External and internal assessment of the pelvic floor and surrounding structures where appropriate — always with full explanation and consent at every step. You are in control throughout.
Explanation of findings
A clear explanation of what was found and what it means for your symptoms. Plain language, no jargon, with space for your questions.
Treatment & exercise
Manual therapy, pelvic floor retraining, breathing and pressure management strategies, and a home exercise programme tailored to your presentation.
Your plan
A clear recommended programme — how many sessions, at what frequency, and what to expect as you progress. Most patients are given home strategies to begin immediately.

Common questions
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly with our women’s health physiotherapist without a GP referral. Private health insurance can be claimed on the spot via HICAPS.
Do I need an internal examination?
Not necessarily — it depends on your presentation. If an internal assessment would be beneficial, your physiotherapist will explain why, what it involves and obtain your full consent before proceeding. You can decline at any point.
Is this only for women who have had babies?
No. Women’s health physiotherapy is appropriate across all life stages — whether you have never been pregnant, are currently pregnant, are postpartum, or are navigating perimenopause and beyond.
Is leaking normal after having a baby?
Common, but not something you should accept as inevitable. Urinary leakage is highly treatable with targeted pelvic floor rehabilitation — many women see significant improvement within a few sessions.
